Happy Halloween!

This year I dressed up at school as the painting "Son of Man," painted by Rene Magritte in 1964 (original painting on right).

"Everything we see hides another thing; we always want to see what is hidden by what we see, that it is impossible. Humans hide their secrets too well." - Rene Magritte

6th Gr. Optical illusions

Students learned about the art movement that started in the 1960’s called Op Art.  Op Art is a style that uses geometric forms (shapes) and color contrast (opposite colors) to create the illusion of movement or 3-D space.  The students practiced making many optical illusions and selected their favorite design for their final artwork.  They did a wonderful job using good balance, composition, and craftsmanship in their artworks.

6th Gr. Self-Portrait Doodles

This project serves as a great opportunity for the students to really get creative and express themselves. We started by making a signature Artist Trading Card (See post below for more pics of ATC's) by painting the background of a card, adding their initials and patterns, and finally they made a custom sticker of their face!  The rest of the drawing and painting shows the student's interests and personality.  Click on the "6th Grade Art" tab to see more student artwork!

Focus Painting

Focus Painting
For this painting project, students looked at an out of focus upside-down artwork and painted what they saw.  Each day the painting got more in focus and at the end of the week, the students saw the source painting clear and right side-up for the first time!
Students did an amazing job mixing colors, as they were only given Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, and White to create all the vivid colors in this painting.

Which one was painted by famous French painter Andre Derain in 1906?
